​Building a Relationship With Your Local Cemetery

 Personally, I think that if you want to get to know a place, you can’t neglect its dead. They are (literally) a part of the land. They are an essential piece of the history of the place. And sadly, they are often, too often, forgotten and ignored. I grew up visiting and spending time in cemeteries, and I am often shocked by how few people I know do the same. Philadelphia is blessed with some truly beautiful cemeteries open to the public – meaning you can begin to know, respect, and honor your local dead right there, right in your local cemetery.

 Based on my own experience, as someone who has spent many hours in cemeteries over the years, here are some tips for getting started with your local cemetery. Keep in mind that my experiences are mine only – use your best judgement, as people and traditions are all different and your experience will undoubtedly vary.
